World Breast Feeding Week

August 1-7, 2015

World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is celebrated August 1-August 7 every year for the past 23 years.

The theme for this year is Breastfeeding and Work---Let's Make it Work!

The goals of this year's week are as follows:

1-gain support for women who are employed and breast feed.

2-promote employers to be family friendly by supporting new moms with their hopes of breast feeding their baby.

3- Inform people about maternal entitlements and strengthen government support.

4- Strengthen practices that enable women in informal sectors to breast feed.

5- Engage groups such as Unions, Worker Rights Organizations etc to protect the rights of breast feeding women in the work place.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has a great WBW page that can be viewed at the following link:

One of the most startling facts on this page is the suboptimal breastfeeding contributes to 800,000 infant deaths.
