Children's Eye Health and Safety Month
Regular eye doctor visits is important in maintaining the health of your eyes.
August is a good month for parents to remember to take their children to the eye doctor since many children go back to school in august. Alot of a child's education is taught visually so good eyesight is important.
There some common signs of vision problems:
Rubbing eyes frequently
Squinting
Turning your head
Closes or covers one eye
If you or your child shows any of these signs, it is best to see you eye doctor.
Glasses
There are 2 types of glasses:
Single vision which corrects distance vision and
Multifocal the can correct both distance vision and near vision.
Contact Lenses
There are basically 2 types:
Hard lenses are rigid yet let oxygen through. They are commonly called Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) lenses.
Soft lenses are most popular and are not rigid like that hard lenses.

What can you do to help?
1. Have you child's eyes screened during normal, routine wellness check ups.
2. Vision testing should begin around 3years of age.
3. Talk to your doctor if you suspect your child has any of the following conditions:
Lazy eye
Crossed eyes
Drooping o the eyelid
Color blindness
Nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism
4. Schedule regular visits with your eye doctor. Don't have an eye doctor? Now would be a good time to find an eye doctor.
Practical tips to help maintain eye health
Wear UV blocking sunglasses
Learn of any family history of eye disease
Learn how to wear/use contacts safely
