Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID)

According to the CDC (Center of Disease Control and Prevention) there are several types of SUID's

1. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

SIDS is the number 1 cause of death in infants 1 month -12 months old. It is an unexplained, sudden death of an infant after a thorough investigation was performed.

2. Unknown Cause- sudden death of an infant less than 12 months old and NO investigation was performed.

3. Accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed

The CDC has a good site that helps explain SUID.

Also they have a Parents and Caregivers page that gives advice to help reduce the risk of SIDS.

Another great site is the American SIDS Institute

This site also lists ways to reduce the risk both before the baby is born and after the baby is born.

WebMD also lists 10 steps to help prevent SIDS.

1. Put a sleeping baby on his/her back

2. Don't smoke near your baby.

3. Keep your sleeping baby close but not in your bed.

4. Breast feed as long as possible.

5. Immunize your baby

6. Keep your baby from overheating

7. Stay away from products that claim to reduce SIDS

8. Don't give honey to an infant under 1 year old

9. Consider using a pacifier to put the baby to sleep.

10. use a firm bed, no soft toys or bedding.
