National Drug and Alcohol Facts Weeks (NDAFW) is a national health observance for teens to promote local events that use NIDA science to….

Shatter the Myths.

This week is about teens, scientists and other experts coming together for an honest conversation about drugs and how they affect the brain, body and behavior. The venues for these conversations can be at school events, community events or other similar type events.

Did you know???

  • About 1/3 of high school seniors reported using an illicit drug sometime in the past year

  • About 5% of seniors report nonmedical use of potentially addictive prescription pain relievers.

  • More than 20% report using marijuana in the past month.

  • ADHD drug Adderall does not make you smarter or cause you to need less sleep

  • A study followed 1,000 people for more than 38 years. These people started smoking marijuana as teens and actually lost 8 IQ points

  • Some young people start taking oxycotin, an opioid pain killer and switch to heroin.

  • Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of disease and death in the U.S. It causes about 1 in 5 early deaths.

  • Alcohol and marijuana are the drugs most abused by teens followed by prescription and cold medicines.

  • Mixing opioids and alcohol is the most common two-drug combination that results in death.

  • About 1 in 10 eighth graders have tried an inhalant to get high
