Children's Dental Health Month
February 2016
This year's theme
"Sugar Wars"
The National Children's Dental Health Month (NCDHM) started in Cleveland OH on February 3, 1941 as a one day event. But it wasn't until February 8, 1949 that the American Dental Association held the first national Children's Dental Health Day.
In 1955 the one day observance became a week long event.
Then in 1981 the event became month long.
The event went from one city to a National observance thus reaching millions of people.
The main reason for the monthly observance is to raise awareness about the importance of good oral health.
Learning, developing and practicing good oral health habits early in life help kids get a great start on a life time of healthy gums and teeth. Included in this are regular check ups at the dentist.
Good to Know…
The ADA suggests that babies have their first dentist visit before their first birthday.
Start using a clean moist gauze pad or washcloth in the first few days of your baby's life.
A baby's front four teeth can appear around 6 months of age but the first tooth may not appear until 12-14 months.
Care givers of kids under 3 years of age should brush a child's teeth with fluoride toothpaste in an amount no bigger than a grain of rice twice daily.
Children 3 years old - 6 years old can use a pea size amount of fluoride toothpaste twice daily.
