Sleep Awareness and School Breakfast Week

This week I am highlighting two topics: Sleep Awareness and School Breakfast Programs.

Sleep Awareness

The National Sleep Foundation is celebrating its annual Sleep Awareness Week this year during the week of March 6 2016. This week is designed to raise awareness for the health benefits of sleep and its importance to safety and productivity.

Sleeping info from https://sleepfoundation.org/sites/default/files/NSF__SAW_SleepTips.pdf

1. Start the week by making time for the sleep you need. Most adults need 7-9 hours a night to function properly.

2. Stop eating a few hours before bedtime.

3. Power down to recharge. Blue light from screens can disrupt your circadian rhythm and affect your ability to sleep.

4. Make your bedroom all about sleep. A comfortable mattress, pillow and bedding is a must. Keep your room dark and use cool paint colors for the walls.

5. Create a bedtime ritual.

6. Put your worries and troubles aside. Put a pen and paper by your bed. Write down any worries of the day before trying to sleep.

7. Remember Day Light Savings begins in March. Time "springs ahead".

It is a celebration of school breakfast programs. According to a 2015 survey, student participation in the breakfast programs increase during this week.

Did you know the school breakfast always includes:

The average breakfast meal is less than $2.
