Heart Valve Disease Awareness
(HVD)
Have you ever wanted to be around for the first of something? For instance, around when a new store opened? Or around when a new song was played? Or a new recipe was tried?
Well today is that day of firsts!! Today is the first ever Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day.
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the Alliance for Aging Research partnered together to bring us this first-ever National Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day.
The grassroots movement to highlight this disease (HVD) found that surprisingly few people knew about HVD. But HDV affects at least 5 million Americans. HVD can be extremely serious. Fortunately innovative treatment can save lives plus increase the quality of life for patients.
This day has 4 key messages:
1. Listen to your body-HVD disrupts blood flow in the heart by affecting how a valve opens or closes. A health care professional can often detect it.
2. Know your risk factors-The greatest risk factor is age.
3. Get your heart checked regularly-doctors can often detect the early warning signs of HVD.
4. Spread the word and raise awareness
