Welcome to May 2018!
This month there are a couple of month long “awareness’s” that I will mention in this blog post. There are certainly additional worthy “awareness’s” but I try to keep this blog fairly short.
I do not fill my blog posts with a lot of information that you can find on your own. I simply want to bring attention to health care issues that you may not otherwise think about. How many times do you think about melanoma or food allergies or your vision? These are just a few topics highlighted in May.
Here is a short list of healthcare issues highlighted during the entire month of May:
Food Allergy Action Month https://www.foodallergy.org/life-with-food-allergies
Healthy Vison Month https://nei.nih.gov/hvm
Ultraviolet Awareness https://www.aao.org/eye-health
(Healthy Vision Month and Ultraviolet Awareness go together)
Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month https://www.aad.org/public/spot-skin-cancer/programs/skin-cancer-awareness-month
Allergy and Asthma Awareness
http://www.aafa.org/page/asthma-and-allergy-awareness-month.aspx
During Healthy vision month doctors encourage people to make eye health a priority. They recommend a few steps to help with eye safety:
Get a comprehensive dilated eye exam
Live a healthy lifestyle by eating healthy foods, no smoking, maintaining a healthy weight
Know your family history
Use protective eye wear
Wear sunglasses
The Food Allery Action Month website has a great page the asks “What is a food Allergy?” Do you know the difference between lactose intolerance and a milk allergy? If not, please visit their website.
Did you know that asthma affects more than 24.5 million Americans? There are more than 50 million Americans that have all types of allergies such as allergies to pollen or latex.
Another awareness that I highlight every year is skin cancer. The website is a great resource.
