Healthcare Literacy

This month I would like to highlight a couple of topics.

The first one is Health Literacy Month. HLM is really one of the reasons My Story Time exists. The basic understanding of health care is critical for your well being. The National Patient Safety Foundation (npsf.org) sponsors a program called Ask Me 3. It is a program “to encourage open communications between patients and health care providers.”

Asking questions can help you:

Take care of your health

Prepare for medical tests

Take your medication correctly

Three questions to ask:

What is my main problem?

What do I need to do?

Why is it important for me to do this?

What do you do if you don’t understand?

Tell your healthcare provider that you still don’t understand. Remember that you are not alone if you don’t understand.
